notecards.

i've started notecards. i know, i know. it's dorky.

but i don't care. i like them. grandma teddie told me that pratt is like a sponge right now...and that he will absorb anything. i totally believe it.

so, i'm risky being dorky and just going with it. i only have a few up. i've labelled the things he most commonly points to. we've got "refrigerator", "microwave" (his favorite...he LOVES to push the buttons and watch it come on and light up), "cabinet", "table", "television", etc.

as you can tell from the video...he loves the cards.

maybe i shouldn't be excited about that.

maybe that only means he's as dorky as his momma.

oh, i can't hardly wait for the day he learns how many uses there are for highlighters! i'll have to get coco over here for that.

enjoy.

to remember.

i've finally started to learn from my experiences. took forever...but hey...no time like the present, right?

i'm going to try my best to slow things down. to remember every detail of the day. to savor every single moment. it's that quote..."life is not lived in minutes...but in moments" something like that.

so when pratt is 16 and doesn't have time to eat breakfast with his mom...i'll remember this picture. and how at one time, he absolutely loved it.

we sit for long periods of time. at the breakfast table. in front of the window. with the blinds pulled up halfway so he can see out. he leans over with his sticky fingers...and he rubs them on the glass. and smiles. i think it's cool to his touch.

pratt with a bowl of fruit and a multigrain, low fat waffle. me with black, hot coffee. and of course, his sippy cup.

he rubs his toes on my knees.

and when he's full, he will make a noise that i'm convinced is the word, "done".

and he will start to chunk pieces of food on the floor. he'll lean wayyyy over to watch them fall and then giggle when ace comes over and gobbles them up.

and then he'll look up at me with those big, chocolate eyes.

and i'll kiss his face. that smells like fruit juice.

oh baby pratt, please stop growing.

it's 3 am, i must be lonely.

so it's 234 am. yes, am.

i can't sleep. i don't know what this is about.

since pratt has slept through the night...around 4 months. you know, the night he cried for 86 minutes...my body has just woken up around 2.

it's like clockwork. i get up, click the monitor, then go to his room. to look at him.

tonight, he looked extra big. extra grown up.

night before last, when we were in his room, he kept pointing to "love you forever". the book. if you're unfamiliar with this book, well, you shouldn't be. it's a great, great book. it's about a mom. and her baby. and how quickly he grows up. it starts out with her being young...and holding her little, swaddled baby. and with every turn of the page, he grows up just a little.

the page after he's an infant, he's supposed to be two years old. and he's sitting by the toilet. i think he's putting her stuff in the toilet. maybe her watch. the little boy looked like pratt to me.

anyway, when pratt was a little baby and i was trying so hard to establish routines with him, i would rock him and read to him. that book was always a go-to book. and i would be okay until the end of it, and then i would just cry my eyes out. around the last few pages.

well, sunday night when i read it to pratt, i cried at page 4. when she sneaks in the two year old's room...because i know pratt's not 2. but he's growing up. and he's no longer that little wrapped up, swaddled baby.

he will only let me hold him while he's eating. or tired. or hurt.

i cherish these moments. even the bumps and bruises. i walk extra slow to the freezer to get out "buddy the cow". he's a stuffed little cow that holds an ice pack for boo-boos. i always pull pratt up as close as i can get him to my face...and hold him tightly all the way there.

i know that before i realize it, he'll be in high school. and then college. and then he'll be married to some silly girl. and i just don't know that i will ever really be ready for that. heck, i'm not ready for his first birthday.

time has never seemed to pass this quickly.

when i was little, i just wanted to be big. i just wanted to fast forward to this.

and now...now i just want it to all slow down.

here he is. in a picture from sugar's wedding. this might be my favorite picture of him. he's playing peek a boo with kendall. he looks so big and grown up.

it hurts my heart.

okay. i'm going to try to go to sleep. maybe i'll get pratt up and put him in the bed with me and his daddy. yes...that sounds good.

night, night.

he speaks...among other things.

i love sundays. i know it's supposed to be a day of rest, but it's always more of a "family" day for us. saturdays we're busy...rarely at home...but sundays are always spent at home. with the three of us...sometimes with other family...but it's always a day that i remember to give thanks for the wonderful people i'm surrounded by.

yesterday was no exception. we woke up late (super tired from all sugar's wedding festivities on saturday...pictures pictures pictures to come!) and stayed in our pjs pretty much all day long. well, pratt did. yes, i'm that mom. :)

pratt enjoyed lots of leftover fruit from the wedding. there must have been 50 blackberries...and he ate those in pretty much one sitting. i was trying to clean the kitchen while he was occupied, and i looked up and saw him holding his bowl at his chest, scooping up the fruit.

his new camo bib. that has sleeves. yes, sleeves. it's the best.

and here is a video of him eating. at one point it sounds like he says, "pineapple". see for yourself. be warned it's kind of like that stuff on ghost hunters. where you really must close your eyes and listen extremely carefully to hear it. but as his mom...i'm pretty sure he's at least trying to say it :) i know, probably not...but just act like you know what i mean... (it's at 37 seconds.)

while dad met with our small group for an our house dinner in little rock, pratt and i took an extra long bath. well, he did. i didn't. he's at the point where he's extremely mobile in the bathtub. he can crawl around in there pretty well. i still sit right there by him...but i am much more comfortable now with him in there. he probably stayed for 30 minutes last night. i had to run warm water twice. he loves the bath.

i have a great video of him crawling as fast as he can to the bathroom when he hears his bathwater running. i'll upload it today. it's so great.

he loves to point at things and verbalize. that's exactly what he's doing here. pointing at the book...and i assume he's saying, "look mom..it's a little boy. kind of looks like me. will you read this to me?"

he's outgrown so many of his pjs. nana bought him some new ones at the gap. my favorite jammies. and i was opening them to get them washed and ready for him when i realized how big they looked. the worst part...they actually fit him! when did he get so grown up?

dad and i ended the night by finishing up our new "parlor room" as kristin called it. the walls are a very light grey, blue. the color was "olympic white" from sherwin williams. a great, great color if you're looking for something grey/blue.

in the picture below, clint is showing the difference between his technique in painting (top left...clean, squares, neat painting) and my...um "technique"...the bottom right. i just sort of wing it...and roll wherever i feel like it. needless to say, my walls needed 2 coats..his only one.

and here is what pratt and ace did while we painted. so cute.

our days.

it's official. i'm ready for this teething stuff to end. geez louise.

i mean, this poor little angel baby has had a runny nose for the past two days. and this poor angel momma has had to change multiple...and i mean multiple dirty diapers.

and he has this weird rash. small bumps on his back, chest, thighs and shoulders. not noticeable unless you feel them. i think it's a heat rash. because he feels hot. i'm assuming that's from the teething. i don't know though.

here are a few pictures from the past few days. he is changing so quickly. i know i sound like a broken record...but he really is.

a few of these probably need descriptions...

the two with magazines. okay. he chooses one magazine, usually a good one. one i don't really want torn up. and he pushes it all around on the floor with one hand. all the while drooling on the pages. or maybe it's snot. i don't know. i just know that the pages of my most recent paula deen magazine are stuck together. i'm worried that if i try to use a recipe, i'll make that beef trifle that rachel made that time on friends. remember that? if you don't...do yourself a favor and watch this. hilarious!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLAD9_HxnuA

he loves broccoli! i'm not really surprised. maybe a little. but y'all...i am convinced it's from making his own baby food. mandy...back me up :) seriously, the kid will eat anything. anything.

he loves corduroy and soft bear. he talks to them in a really high pitched voice. not his usual voice. and he uses inflection. it's like he's seriously trying to have a conversation with them. he did the same thing with ace last night. not the typical, "da da". it's more of a conversation. his voice raises and then lowers. inflection is the only way i know how to describe it. it's fantastic to listen to. completely melts my heart. clint and i laughed so hard last night listening to him.

oh, and anytime you give the kid a cup to play with...he acts like he's drinking from it. so, so funny.

have wonderful wednesdays!

dear pratt.

dear pratt,

you're growing up so fast. it's making my head spin. literally.

tonight you were crawling as fast as you could down the hallway towards the front door. your daddy was behind you and when you stopped long enough to look back...you'd see him, laugh...and then crawl even faster just giggling away.

daddy started saying, "bye bye pratt" and waving to you. and as clear as i've ever heard it...you said, "bye bye."

you're such a sharp little boy. tonight at dinner, daddy and i were talking. and i guess we weren't paying as much attention to you as you would have liked. you let us know about it by whining.

this is weird for us because it's something you rarely do. the things that would typically cause you to whine...like being sleepy or hungry...instead of whining, you stick those two middle fingers in your mouth. we all know what that means...and voila...problem solved.

well, tonight, you were mad. and fussy. and whiny.

and so when you started it up, we both knew there was nothing wrong with you. and so your daddy said in his most stern voice, "pratt. there is nothing wrong with you. we are right here. you are okay."

and i promise that immediately you understood. i think it was his voice. the change in his voice.
you are totally into your books. when we get on the floor...which is where we spend most of our time these days, you always go to certain books. i'm funny about taking care of books, so right now, the only ones we really "play" with are the board books. you love them. you love to "turn the page" for me. you're a good page turner.

we love you more than you'll ever think humanly possible. until you have children of your own. it's then you'll understand how we feel. and how everything we do...we do it with thoughts of you. always trying to make the right decisions. always putting you first. always thinking of how things will affect you.

so as you get older, and think i'm the most horrible mom in the world...always know that i'm doing my best. i know i will fail you. and i hate that. i'm not perfect. but i promise that i'm trying.

i love you little pumpkin.

favorites.

pratt and i were lucky enough to spend the night in hot springs with poppy, cookie and sugar. here are some of my favorite pictures.

spencer is so pretty in this picture. she's always pretty...but this picture really captures her face to me. her light eyes...everything about her.

we are super excited about her and tyler's upcoming wedding! yay! i know they are excited too!

the picture of pratt and cookie...well, he was exhausted last night. just basically fell asleep on her. he'd open his eyes, smile and then fall back asleep. it was bizarre. and then he slept until 830 am! wow.

and the one of him and my dad is just great. they are both barely smiling. typical boys.

our first family tradition.

i've thought often about what makes my family so special to me. anyone who knows me has heard me say a million times, "when i was a kid..."

and it inevitably leads to some crazy story. some sad...some sweet...but most of them funny. i'd say probably 99% of them are funny stories. it's just the way our family has always been. my dad is one of the funniest people i know. and my mom is funny too...but in a totally different way. she and my sister are twins with their sense of humor. when the three of us girls get together and start remembering things...it gets pretty hilarious. for us, at least.

like this one time when we were pulling into new orleans. if you've ever driven there, you know that once you get to the outskirts, traffic gets bad. there are something like 6 lanes...and it just gets crazy.

well, about three years ago..maybe four. i dunno. it was the august of hurricane katrina. we went at the beginning of august. katrina was at the end of the month. anyway, we went to see aunt betty, frank and nick. and we got stuck in traffic outside new orleans. mom and i were in the front seat. and spencer in the back.

spencer looks to her left and sees this minivan. and written on the door was, "one van phan". with his cell number, email address, etc. it was a taxi driver of sorts. well, spencer...being spencer...goes, "gaaa lee. i would not want to be riding in that van right now....i bet it's HOT!"

i sort of look over to see what she's talking about...and immediately i realize that she has translated the "phan" as "fan". hi.larious.

so i start laughing...and mom realizes it then too...and she starts laughing. well, we have this bad habit of wetting our pants when we laugh too hard. i've done it my entire life. while funny....it can get pretty embarrassing.

so mom and i are laughing so hard we can't breathe...and we're both chanting to ourselves over and over again..."don't pee...don't pee!" spencer is in the backseat trying to figure out why the man only has one fan when it's the dirty south and it's something like 100 degrees outside.

while this probably isn't funny to you...it was hysterical to me and mom. and spencer once she figured out why we were laughing so hard.

so back to what makes a family special....(long road to a small house, i know)...

traditions. family traditions make a family special.

we had several. let's see...

birthday dinners were up to the birthday person. we got to pick everything for the day. everything from what we ate for breakfast...what we did...what we had for dinner....everything everything everything. my pick was always pigs in the blankets with macaroni and cheese. this is typical. my mom is a gourmet chef...and i choose mac n cheese. from a box.

as we got older, we always went to new york city in the summer. or for spring break. shopping. aunt carol was there. and there is no better shopping than new york city. the streets of nyc. we'd shop. watch broadway shows. eat in china town. buy stollen purses from shady men on the streets. a great time.

one of clint's traditions was eating kfc on sundays after church.

i'm such a fried chicken kind of girl...that we've decided to adopt it for our family too. we swing by there right after church and then all eat together when we get home.

so...pratt...i hope you enjoy this as you get older as much as your daddy and i do.

here you are with mac n cheese smeared on your face...digging into the five dollar fill it up box.

a day in the dht.

saturday morning we left bright and early for the dream hometown.

we arrived at the sale barn around 9. and let me say....it was crowded. maybe because it was 75 degrees...or maybe because as clint said...there are so many things to choose from...actually the exact quote was, "if you can't get it here, han...there ain't no use in havin' it." (in the most country-fied voice you have ever heard.)

i immediately started taking pictures. i got my camera out and took one of pratt in his stroller and clint told me to put the camera up. i refused. and about the time i was turning it off, i spotted two men carrying chickens that they had bought at the sale barn...upside down and by their feet. it was the cruelest thing i have ever seen. i immediately turned my camera on to get it on film. mostly so i could email it to aspca and they could arrest those men. but clint told me to put my camera away. he made some comment about how i looked like the japanese people that constantly snap pictures while at disney world.

so after we walked around there and saw everything you could possibly ever want/need...we headed to grandma and grandpas. there was a surprise visitor! aunt deedee!! yay! so pratt got to play with her. and grandma gave us a HUGE bucket of freshly picked blackberries.

y'all. these things were gigantic. bigger than my thumbs. and they were warm from the sun. heaven.on.earth.

when we left there we headed to see mamaw and papaw. and then we headed home. pratt was pooped from not having a "real" nap today. he slept on the way home and woke right as we turned onto our street.

clint is selling his boat...and so while clint worked on cleaning that up, pratt and i did some outdoor chores. it was so pretty. the weather was beautiful. pratt ate a few leaves...and then played with our mail. and then he and clint went for a jog and i made a cobbler with grandma's blackberries. yummy.

needless to say, the baby was a tad fussy. i couldn't get him situated...until i pulled out his toothbrush. he is totally his fathers child. it did the trick.

after pratt went to sleep, clint and i watched the first few episodes of 24. it was great...and extremely addictive!

my perfect saturday. yes. perfect.

our weekend plans.

so tonight as i was getting on the computer, i noticed something on yahoo. it was titled, "what does your handwriting say about you?"

when we were in austria a couple of years ago, i started talking to grandpa about this. he can analyze handwriting...and i asked him to do mine. i was interested in what it would say about me. clint made fun of me because i wrote in all lowercase letters. grandpa was quick to stand up for me and said that it actually an admirable quality (to anyone except an english teacher, i'm sure. somewhere mrs. kirtley is so, so upset with me ;)

anyway, grandpa said that the lowercase writing just meant that i don't put myself above anyone else.

isn't that the best? i mean, don't we all strive to be that way. of course, i'm not. i mean, i try. but i fail miserably every single day. anyway, it was nice to hear it said about me...and in a way, has made me strive to be more of that person. that person that i wish i could be. that person i strive to be. that person i hope pratt grows up to be.

well, tonight i did another handwriting sample. and i thought it was pretty accurate. about my personality and such.

they had you write "she sells seashells by the seashore" in cursive. i hate cursive. the person who invented it should be killed in my opinion. it takes the beauty out of writing. it gets all sloppy and slanted and well, i hate it.

but i did it...and come to find out, if your "s" is "open at the bottom"...which mine is...here is what it said, "you might not be following your heart. for example, you have always wanted to be an artist, but you have a career in finance."

that's me. well, without the career in finance. i mean, i don't really have a career. but i'm not following my heart. i have always. always. always. wanted to be a writer.

when i was younger, that meant writing poetry. maybe that was because i can remember my dad reading me greek mythology. when other kids were getting "normal" bedtime stories, i was getting stories about the river styx...and narcissus.

i've always loved books. my mom has the greatest voices for the book "superfudge". one of my favorite judy blume books. she does fudge's voice the best. she would always say, "pee tah" for "peter". cracked me up.

anyway, i've always wanted to write. i'm not sure what it would be. and i'm not convinced that anyone outside of my immediate family would even purchase it. i've thought about writing a book about being a mom...but haven't we all? and do i have anything to say that hasn't already been said? probably not.

i thought about combining pratt's letters into a book. but who would want to read that besides pratt? :) i mean, seriously.

and then i've thought about writing a book about love. and boys. writing a book i wish i had read when i was in high school...maybe even junior high.

i don't know. i'm sure it's a pipe dream. but it's still a dream. maybe one day. probably not...but maybe.

in other news. hopefully, tomorrow we're heading to the beebe sale barn (that's for you, clara :). the weather is supposed to be beautiful. if you aren't lucky enough to be from the dream hometown, the sale barn is kind of like a flea market/farmers market in beebe. according to clint and other white county folk..."people come from all over". i'm not completely sure about that...but you can actually buy anything from guns to goats there. and everything in between.

clint says he can remember being a young boy, and being given a dollar. and he would walk around that place trying to figure out exactly what he wanted to buy with his dollar.

anyway, i'm so i'm excited and i hope that this is pratt's first visit of many. so it's there and then off to see the grandparents! yay!

have wonderful weekends!

ps. the entire time i've been writing this, this is what yoda has been doing. apparently the light is too bright for her. but she won't move from right beside me. i'm telling y'all..she is NOT a cat. she's a human, trapped in a cat's body.

you know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. - dr. seuss

About Me

My photo
i'm a girl who likes to write. not a girl that's necessarily good at writing. it's cathartic, i think. and boy do i need that from time to time. i married a wonderful man named clint in may of 2007. he is everything i am not. he is calm. he makes plans. he is organized. his truck is always clean. his clothes are hung by types of shirt/color/size/etc. i'm full of nervous energy. i'm spur of the moment. i can't ever find what i'm looking for. we live in my car...pretty much. i'm lucky if my clothes are within ten feet of my closet. God gave us a precious angel of a baby in september of 2008. his name is pratt allen. he is 2.5 years old.we have another little one on the way. his name is max wesley. and he is due may 19th. somehow i'll be the mother of two boys. craaaaa.zy. i spend my days cleaning house. picking worms and caterpillars out of the flower beds. cooking meals. shopping at target. washing clothes. playing on the floor. reading books. doing puzzles. traveling to sonic. and the library. and blogging. i hope you enjoy our blog. feel free to leave a comment. hopefully it's a nice one. i tend to wear my heart on my sleeve.
