it's 3 am, i must be lonely.

it's around 330. and i can't sleep. i've woken up several times throughout the night, but this time i couldn't will myself back to sleep. so i got up.

we got some bad news yesterday morning.

let me start at the beginning.

tuesday i had my first ultrasound. i was pretty excited about seeing the baby. clint didn't get to go with me, but i wasn't really bothered by it. i never dreamed something would be wrong.

as the picture came up on the screen, all the ultrasound tech saw was the gestational sac. no fetal pole. which, to my limited knowledge, is the baby.

she immediately made a comment about how she didn't see the fetal pole, but it was probably because i was just early. i probably had my dates wrong. my LMP probably really wasn't april 20th. no big deal, she said. we'd try it again in a few weeks.

as i waited in the waiting room to see the doctor, i heard her walk out and tell him.

dr. s, we have a first time OB patient who is here now. i saw a gestational sac, but no fetal pole. she's waiting on you. i just wanted to inform you before you saw her.

all the air left my body. i knew then and there that something was bad wrong. i knew with certainty when my LMP was. heck, i even knew the day i ovulated (well, within 24 hours) and i was pretty sure of the day i got pregnant. i had implantation bleeding too. so i knew there was something weird.

the nurse came in and asked me all these questions again. was there any way i could be wrong? or off a few days? or maybe i had forgotten?

no, no, no.

my wonderful doctor came in. talked to me. told me he saw this alot. thought i was early. like probably 5 weeks. and that he wanted to reschedule me for 2 weeks. do it all again. i asked him if i needed to worry. if i were your wife, what would you say to me?

he told me that he of course had no way of knowing, but that he was fairly certain i was fine. asked about pregnancy symptoms. i had a few. i had never been sick with pratt. not one time. and i hadn't been sick this time. i was sore in areas. tired. but that's about it.

well, hannah...there is one thing...

and i jumped on it. yes, yes, i want lab work. he laughed at me because i had googled it already. in the five minutes i had waited. i wanted my hcg levels. so he agreed. took me to the lab. waited with me.

i tried so hard not to cry. i didn't want to be that crazy girl that is alone and can't stop crying.

the plan was to give blood tuesday and then again 48 hours later. in that period of time, my hcg levels should double. at least.

yesterday, he called to tell me that they had not. they had gone from 9000 to 11000. and he didn't know why. he just knew it wasn't what he wanted to see. he said with numbers that high, he should have seen a fetal pole.

he asked if there had been any change. had i started bleeding? cramping? anything?

no, no, no.

i asked if i should expect it soon. he didn't know. maybe, maybe not. some people don't bleed.

he told me that he wanted me to keep my 2 week appointment. and we'd do another ultrasound to make sure there was no fetal pole evident, and then we'd go from there. he said when i came in, we'd try to figure out what went wrong. he'd review my lab results and go from there.

so that brings me to this moment. this moment when my heart is torn into pieces. when i just want to scream and yell and cry.

i can't admit this out loud. or to clint. or to anyone, i guess. but there is this small part of me that knows God works miracles. and that if he wants to save this baby, He certainly can.

but then there's the human side of me that gets science. that understands lab results. and numbers. and that side knows this has been a miscarriage.

and it's like there is this internal battle. i show no signs of miscarriage. well, no physical signs. but it's there. on her screen. no baby. no fetal pole. no little bitty bean.

i told pratt that i had a baby in my belly right after we found out. he didn't forget. he doesn't forget anything. and so yesterday, he pulled up his shirt and pointed at his belly and said, "baby!". then he wanted to pull mine up and tell me the same thing. "baby!". i let him. i didn't correct him. didn't fix it. didn't try to explain that there was no baby there.

sure, he wouldn't have understood, but it's more that i just couldn't bring myself to do it. couldn't bring myself to say it.

i never knew i could love someone so much. someone i never even met.

and last night, last night i figured out why this hurt so much.

it's because i didn't just see this baby as a baby. as a small, tiny baby.

i saw her like i see pratt. as a toddler. a one and a half year old sweet baby. one that gives the best, biggest and tightest hugs. one that kisses you right on the lips. a child that laughs. and sits with her dad to watch tv.

and so it's like i've lost pratt. or his sister. or brother. i lost this child. this teenager. this adult.

and that's why my heart breaks. because i have no control over this. and i can't do a damn thing about it. i just have to sit here. and wait to bleed. or to cramp. wait for this to be over. for me to stop hoping and praying and wishing that God would intervene.

my friend stacy said something that i keep repeating over and over and over again. and that is this.

that God created that baby. and He loved her so much that He couldn't stand to part with her. so He is keeping her with Him.

and so if this is true. if there's a heaven, then my sweet baby is dancing with joyce. and playing with mama kitty. and she's met my mimi and poppy. and granny and marvin. and clint's childhood friend scrap. and she's probably being rocked by mamaw fulks.

and as crazy as that sounds, i find comfort in that. would i rather have her here? yes. absolutely. but i'm selfish. and human.

if you've never been through this, and you're rolling your eyes at me. and thinking i'm overreacting, it's okay. because i've been there. i hurt for so many friends who went through this...but i never in a million years could have dreamed that it was this hard. this lonely.

as with anything, until you walk in those shoes, you have no room to judge.

so to all of you out there who know what i'm feeling, i'm sorry. i know now what this feels like. and i'm sorry i wasn't a better friend at the time...

please keep our small family in your prayers. i know that clint is hurting too. he lost a baby just like i did. and while he doesn't have to deal with the physical changes, his heart is breaking just like mine.

Hannah,

I have ALWAYS felt like even though you and I have never met, we are kindred spirits. I swear, if you've said, I've thought it. We have so much in common... It's crazy. We went through this EXACT same loss 2 years ago. (and I say exact, because our doctors appointments were strangely similar!) Nothing anyone says can take away the pain and emptiness you're feeling right now, so I won't even try. But know that I am praying for you and Clint (and pratt!) I hurt for you right now, and wish there was something I could do for you! Hold on to the hope that the Lord is not finished yet!

O Hannah! I cannot stop the tears. As I read this I am reliving every thought, tear and emotion that I had with my miscarriage. It sucks. There is nothing anyone could say to me to make me feel better. Nothing. I had to figure it out myself. I continually told myself that God did not give me a spirit of fear but of power. He has prepared you for this long before this moment. He has brought this to your life for a great purpose. You are a wonderful mother, one that I aspire to be like. And I have complete confidence that when you hold Baby #2, whenever it is, your world will stop and you will love that baby even more because of this experience. Without my miscarriage, I would not have Lincoln and life just would not have been the same. I love you -- I'm praying for you and crying for you.

Dear Hannah,
As I sit here crying and reading, I compare this to the feelings I had for the 7 yrs trying to get pregnant with you. It wasn't exactly the same experience, but I know from my experience that the love of friends and family coupled with the prayers of many will give you strength to accept this great loss. As Robin said, the Lord is not finshed yet. Love you, Mom

Hannah, sweet hannah. I have no words that are going to make everything ok. I don't even have the camaraderie of experience to offer. But, I need you to know that I'm praying for you, with you - even on the other side of the country, I'm hugging you. It's ok to mourn and to be hurt and angry and scared and everything else all at once. You know that. And I wish I were closer so I could..well, I don't know exactly what I would do, but I do wish I were closer.

Don't forget that as much as God loves that little baby, he loves you, and Clint and Pratt too. I hope you find comfort. (love)

You are one of the bravest, loving people I know and I know that God is crying with you right now. Many prayers and positive thoughts from my heart to yours (and Clint and Pratt).

Hannah,
This is my first time to read your blog. I felt compelled to do it as I was reading your facebook comment. I am so sorry. Your family is in my prayers. I wish I could take the pain from Clint and you. Adam and I had infertility issues for both girls. It took us three years to become pregnant with Olivia. It was an emotional rollercoaster! My friends and sister in law were pregnant while I was desperately wanting a precious baby, seeking answers, lab tests, costly procedures, and asking God "Why Me?" The process was hard for Adam and me. But, it made us closer. I do believe God had a plan for us. My close friend gave me a pillow during that time that I still have and read daily. Hannah,
I'm with you. It ain't over til it's over. I told you last night that I won't stop praying for Hattie ;) until you say it's over. God truly can perform miracles, though we are not meant to understand how or why. Your life, your story, creates ripples like a stone in a pond. And this pregnancy-----this baby----will live on forever in the way that it has affected your family and the people who read your words. How lucky to be loved so much, even before birth! If anyone doesn't think of your baby as "real", well, they are misguided at the least, and dumb as rocks at the worst. You inspire me daily. I love you. But you know that already!

You don't know me and I don't know you. I came across your blog on a friend of mine's page. I am truly heart broken over this event in your life. I can't fully understand what you are going through but I know the pain as my husband and I are trying to get pregnant right now. You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers.

hannah,
i am so so so sorry. i don't know what else to say. i haven't gone through what you've gone through, but i am so sorry.

you are a rock. clint is a rock. together...you make a mountain for small pratt. he will understand. kids are so resilient.

i knew last last saturday when you said that you didn't regret telling folks early that if something were to happen that you'd be the best advocate ever for those babies that go to heaven before they're born.

you have a gift. you have many, many gifts. please continue to share your joy and your pain so that those of us quite unsure of what to do with either can handle life more gracefully.

i love you so much.

dear hannah- nothing can be said to feel the void- nothing. I know- the night paul and i lost our baby-it was a never ending night of crying and a pain so deep in my chest-my arms hurt because i wanted another baby so badly- you will have another one- that does not make the loss of this one easier. KNOW that God is in control- he is the master of the universe, he holds you and your family in his hands- and at times he feels furthest away- he is carrying you hannah.
love you you, Clint, and sweet Pratt

Hannah,

I am so sorry. I lost my first baby in 2004. I went in for my first ultrasound at 12 weeks and no fetal pole just a gestational sac. It was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. I was just devastated. It's still your baby no matter when terrible things happen and you still have to mourn for her. I understand your pain and am thinking of you.

About Me

My photo
i'm a girl who likes to write. not a girl that's necessarily good at writing. it's cathartic, i think. and boy do i need that from time to time. i married a wonderful man named clint in may of 2007. he is everything i am not. he is calm. he makes plans. he is organized. his truck is always clean. his clothes are hung by types of shirt/color/size/etc. i'm full of nervous energy. i'm spur of the moment. i can't ever find what i'm looking for. we live in my car...pretty much. i'm lucky if my clothes are within ten feet of my closet. God gave us a precious angel of a baby in september of 2008. his name is pratt allen. he is 2.5 years old.we have another little one on the way. his name is max wesley. and he is due may 19th. somehow i'll be the mother of two boys. craaaaa.zy. i spend my days cleaning house. picking worms and caterpillars out of the flower beds. cooking meals. shopping at target. washing clothes. playing on the floor. reading books. doing puzzles. traveling to sonic. and the library. and blogging. i hope you enjoy our blog. feel free to leave a comment. hopefully it's a nice one. i tend to wear my heart on my sleeve.
