random thoughts.

i grew up never worrying about anything. i mean that.

i never, ever, ever knew if my parents were having trouble paying for things. it never occured to me that they might not make it to the next payday. i never worried about food. i never worried about having a place to sleep, a warm bath. clothes or shoes to wear to school.

instead, i worried about what clothes i would have. it hurts me to type this...but i can remember not wanting to be seen buying palmetto jeans. they were the jeans that had an upside down triangle. or maybe right side up. i don't remember. i just remember that it was the opposite of the guess jeans. my mom wasn't going to buy us the guess jeans. probably because she had already bought us several pair. and we didn't need to spend that much on some silly jeans. (now...let me say that currently, i do spend a silly amount of money on jeans. but that is because of what they do for my booty. seriously...there is a reason jeans are so expensive. it's because they can make your hinny look a.mazing.)

as i was thumbing through my "at home in arkansas" magazine today, and admiring the cool dining room furniture, the neat, new trendy wallpaper...and wishing i could make my house as pretty as tobi fairley made a house in the magazine, an oprah commercial came on. i know i'm not supposed to watch oprah. because she doesn't believe in god (or something like that...) but i think that some of her shows are worth watching. i think that she does bring attention to some important issues. and tomorrow is one of those shows.

it's on what is happening in our nation to families that have lost jobs...lost homes. lost what they owned. lost everything. and there was a little boy. sitting next to lisa ling. and she said, "your birthday is tomorrow. you'll be eleven. if you could have anything for your birthday, what would you ask for?"

and his response. "a cake with icing...and lots of love."

i would HATE to know what i asked for when i was eleven. i know...without calling my mother to ask...that it was way more than "a cake with icing and lots of love".

as humiliated as i am about the palmetto jean incident...i can say that i try sooo hard to not be that way now.

i know that my parents worked their butts off for me and spencer to have what we did. i was constantly reminded of what i had. constantly reminded that not everyone had what i had. and as a parent, i can totally appreciate what they did for us.

my mother and father allowed us to be children. innocent kids. kids who slept soundly at night not worrying about anything. well, nothing important.

i want this for pratt. i never want him to worry about where his next meal is coming from. i want him to be confident that he will always have a warm house and warm food. and a warm bath. with a fresh, warm towel right out of the dryer after the bath. (is there anything better...i don't think so.)

i hope that our family will always be able to provide these things. and let's say that we will. how do i teach pratt to appreciate these things? how do you teach that money doesn't grow on trees?

clint and i talked last night about having birthday parties in the future where kids brought gifts for donations. instead of gifts for pratt. we'd still give him gifts, of course. but how great would it be for him to want this. for him to request this!?

my parents stressed the importance of charity. the importance of giving. be that with service. or money. or time.

this was all random, i know. it's just that i keep hearing that the next ten years are going to be so hard. economically. with the recession. and i'm embarrassed that i'm reading silly magazines. and watching silly shows like top chef where they're making silly food and buying expensive wine.

i'm just bothered. bothered that i don't know what this world will look like in ten years. when pratt can really look around and see it.

bothered that i feel inept about changing it.

bothered that i'm bothered...

i'm thinking that i already told you this, but in case i didn't, here's what we do. we got an idea from my cousin that worked really well for bradley's last birthday. we wrote on the invitation: "no gifts please, the only presents we want is your presence." it got the point across and nobody brought presents anyway except maybe one person, and i felt like everyone was relieved. there are wayyyyy too many kids birthday parties you'll find out very soon, and it is wayyyyy too expensive to attend all of them. i wish all the parents adopted the same policy. i want our kids to grow up enjoying the presence of friends and not focusing on the "gimme stuff...ME ME ME" aspect of it. we do get them presents for their birthdays, and i think that's plenty; there's no need for everyone else to have to spend money on my kid in order to get to go to a fun birthday party. i think you are right on.

A few months ago, Chris and I really started thinking about ways we could teach Alyssa about servanthood, b/c that's one thing that HAS to be taught by example. You can talk about serving all you want, but unless your kids see you doing it, they won't get it. So among other things, we came up with the birthday party idea...we love it, and decided back in December (while I was planning Alyssa's party) that we would do that for Blakely's 1st birthday...I'm going to call ACH soon and see what the best things to donate for the kids are and request that those things be brought in lieu of presents for B. And on another day, take Alyssa up there (and probably a few of her friends)and hopefully she'll be able to pass a few things out to kids. Not only is charity involved, but she'll hopefully see just how blessed our family is. Our prayer is that when her birthday rolls around again, she'll want to do something like that too! **Disclaimer**Blakely will still be getting presents from us...I have a garbage bag full of Alyssa's old toys in storage...she'll never know the difference right? And we need a new tv for the car...I think we might do that too...for the girls to share. And if the g'parents want to do something for B, we won't stop them...I would hate it if someone tried to keep me from buying my g'child a 1st bday present! Anyway, I don't think that a few presents will ruin the point...

oh we did the "only present is your presence" and got ugly responses like "it's his birthday and we'll bring presents if we want" so I told them to pick a gift and donate it in jackson's name or we'd donate it to lebonheur for them. hmpf. ;)

I agree about Oprah and that she does some amazing things. I did hear a guy one time refer to what she does as "narcithropic" which I thought was really interesting.

About Me

My photo
i'm a girl who likes to write. not a girl that's necessarily good at writing. it's cathartic, i think. and boy do i need that from time to time. i married a wonderful man named clint in may of 2007. he is everything i am not. he is calm. he makes plans. he is organized. his truck is always clean. his clothes are hung by types of shirt/color/size/etc. i'm full of nervous energy. i'm spur of the moment. i can't ever find what i'm looking for. we live in my car...pretty much. i'm lucky if my clothes are within ten feet of my closet. God gave us a precious angel of a baby in september of 2008. his name is pratt allen. he is 2.5 years old.we have another little one on the way. his name is max wesley. and he is due may 19th. somehow i'll be the mother of two boys. craaaaa.zy. i spend my days cleaning house. picking worms and caterpillars out of the flower beds. cooking meals. shopping at target. washing clothes. playing on the floor. reading books. doing puzzles. traveling to sonic. and the library. and blogging. i hope you enjoy our blog. feel free to leave a comment. hopefully it's a nice one. i tend to wear my heart on my sleeve.
